![]() ![]() Long before the advent of computer graphic imagery or CGI effects were invented, Kubrick and his crew, had to deal with new, never before encountered problems. Opening of “2001: A Space Odyssey” Apollo 8 lunar surface and “Earthrise” Predicted by the film’s opening sequence, the astronauts of Apollo 8’s experience of “Earthrise” and its vibrant colors against the bleak gray scale blacks and whites of the Moon in December of 1968. As of 1964, when production on the film first began, manned space flight had yet to leave low Earth orbit and would not do so until months after the release of “2001”. On the topic of lighting, Trumbull is exhaustive in his recounting of the special problems regarding live action shooting, difficulties when using multiple film formats, such as standard 35mm and large-format 70mm film, and new lighting considerations (Trumbull, 1969). He went on to talk about some of the specific problems encountered in bringing forth so great an object (Trumbull, 1969). There are many stories connected with the production and its special effects. Known for the innovative techniques, trick camera movements and use of huge composition shots, “2001” is also hailed as a ground-breaking film for the introduction of new methods of lighting and cinematography.ĭouglas Trumbull, the special photographic effects supervisor, stated in a 1969 interview with American Cinematographer, that “2001: A Space Odyssey” was a complex and difficult film. Together, they hammered out a story and a film that has been called (as recently as 2010) the greatest film of all time (Armstrong, 2011). Kubrick shared the writing of the screenplay with science fiction author and inventor Arthur C. His visual masterpiece was awarded the Oscar® for Best Special Visual Effects that year.
